Thanks for the Free Press
by Michael
Fahrenheit 9/11 made nearly $22 million as the top-grossing movie this past weekend. Some of its success has to be attributed to the efforts that went into blocking the distribution and showing of this film.
First, Disney refused to distribute it for political reasons, prompting the Weinsteins to buy the film back and find another distributor. Then conservative groups launched a campaign to intimidate theaters from showing the film without success. Finally, they filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission to try to stop the airing of television ads for the film, a move that could take months to resolve and therefore comes too late.
On the other hand, conservative groups have been successful in creating a lot of free press for the movie. Something money can't buy. And for that, Michael Moore is laughing all the way to the bank.
