On Christmas day, we drove 90 miles to Newman, California and back. We did not see one highway patrol vehicle on the way there or on the way back. The CHP is supposed to be engaged in a "Maximum Enforcement" program until midnight tonight. So how could we drive 180 miles and not see one patrol car that whole time? That's three-plus hours of driving and not one CHP car, at all.

Scottish troops will have to share kilts because there is a shortage of uniform issue garments. Considering the propensity to go commando among the troops, I'd make sure that the last guy had it cleaned before I wore one of those things.

According to reports, the deceased two-year-old weighed only 17 pounds before she died. She was obviously under nourished unless she had some kind of congenital disease that impaired her growth. How a doctor to give her a clean bill-o- health on November 30th is beyond me.

There's a video game based on the "Left Behind" series of fictional novels that encourages players to kill people who refuse to convert to Christ. Huh?! It's beyond me why "Apocalypto" is at the top of the box office list. The movie is apparently full of historical mistakes including the arrival of "salvation" in the form of conquistadors and Christianity. Which is apparently the point of the film; that the savage Mayans were destined to be saved, by the Spanish. Chalk up the discrepancies to Mel Gibson's continued efforts to spread his own brand of catholicism that includes extensive revisionist views of colonialism.

That's what a certain Oklahoma senator would have us all believe. He's even has some "scientists" who back his claim. And sure, the evidence is not indisputable, but it is compelling. And how do you explain that more scientists agree on the existence and cause of global warming than don't? What do you mean turn the heater down, Senator? It's not even on.

Poor customer service has become the norm rather than the exception. Andy Budd's experience is not surprising in the age of off shoring call centers to save money. Software vendors in general are notorious for bad customer support. They get away with it because they know their customers don't have a lot of alternatives.

We recently began using Netflix for movie rentals so I was very interested in the "60 Minutes" segment last night featuring the company's founder and CEO, Reed Hastings. The entire segment was well-done, but one thing that really caught my attention was the segment about the lack of call-in support.
