Single Female Persuasion
by Michael
Here's an interesting article about courting the votes of unmarried women. The big revelation is that there are as many single women as there are married, but spending time and resources trying to court these women as a block may be a big waste. These women are not like soccer moms who had specific concerns and agendas. Their differences are too diverse to lump them into one group.
First, there are the older women. They're a different generation who grew up during the30's, 40's and 50's. Yes they vote, but they vote on issues most relevant to them. Many are not as concerned about improving education or infrastructure. Their key issues are health care and social security, and maybe taxes.
Next, there are the baby boomers. Most are likely to vote but they're split on just about every major issue. The war, abortion, education, equal rights, gay rights, civil rights. You name the issue, and you'll find this group split practically down the middle.
Finally, the younger generations may be the hardest group to wrangle together. Some of these women are very engaged and knowledgeable when it comes to politics. While many others are so out of the loop, they couldn't even tell you who the vice president is. For every politically active woman I've known in this group, I can point to at least ten who have never registered to vote, or have never voted. They're a part of the generation that John Mayer sings about that sits by waiting for the world to change, instead of actually doing something to make change happen. You might as well repeal the 19th amendment as far as these women are concerned. Why give them the right to vote when they don't exercise it?
