The Unfriendly Skies

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

We traveled to Michigan last week to visit family. Flying with a baby is very challenging. Besides worrying about keeping the baby comfortable, you also have to worry about all the things you have to take with you. Once you get on the plane you have to find somewhere to put everything, and there never seems to be enough room. This was especially true on our first flight out of Oakland.

Learning to Count

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Someone needs to learn to count. We were at the march in San Francisco, and while I don't think there were 40 thousand people there, I do think there were more than three thousand. After all, one would think that a march of three thousand would take a lot less than two hours to walk eight city blocks.

Race Hate and Bad Judgment

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

The racist column that was printed in AsianWeek, a free weekly that purports to be the "voice of the Asian American community" has raised quite a stir. The controversy raises two issues, racism in the media and the editorial judgment that allowed this column to be published.

Oh, Canada!

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

This is just ridiculous. How can a minor offense committed over 20 years ago still be relevant? I can understand restrictions regarding felony convictions but misdemeanor possession in 1975? Maybe those folks should just spend that $500.00 a night in an American ski resort instead. I guess Canadian businesses are doing well enough that they can afford the loss of revenue from such "hardened" American criminals.

Grammy Whammy

Monday, February 12th, 2007

There were sighs of relief as Carrie Underwood was awarded the New Artist Grammy from the fans of the other artists nominated in this category. This award has often condemned the winner to obscurity before their second album could even be released (see Men at Work, Terrence Trent D'arby, Milli Vanilla, et al). It's possible that Underwood will overcome the jinx since she's a country star and they tend to maintain a loyal following unless you're the Dixie Chicks.

Death by Water

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

It's unreal how irresponsible and stupid these guys were. They can't deny that they were unaware of the consequences of drinking too much water. One of them talked about the dangers before the contest began. Now someone has died, and they may be facing criminal charges. They're certainly facing a bunch of lawsuits, and no waivers are going to protect them in this case.

Insurance Offers No Disaster Relief

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Isn't it funny how disasters turn insurance companies into just another bottom-line corporation? They happily take your money and promise to be there when disaster strikes. But just have one natural disaster, and suddenly you're NOT in good hands, they're NOT like good neighbor and you CAN'T count on them when going's rough.

There Goes the Neigborhood

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

A developer wants to buy out this trailer park in South Florida that would give the residents a huge profit for their investments. But some aren't ready to give up the trailer-park life. I say take the money and run. You're just one hurricane away from applying for FEMA loans to pay for a new home.

Tainted Tartan

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Scottish troops will have to share kilts because there is a shortage of uniform issue garments. Considering the propensity to go commando among the troops, I'd make sure that the last guy had it cleaned before I wore one of those things.

Another CoCo County System Death

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

According to reports, the deceased two-year-old weighed only 17 pounds before she died. She was obviously under nourished unless she had some kind of congenital disease that impaired her growth. How a doctor to give her a clean bill-o- health on November 30th is beyond me.
