Quokka Sports Chronicles

In 1999, it was the focus on storytelling that distinguished Quokka Sports from other online sports sites such as ESPN and SportsLine.

Quokka Sports immersed its audience into the experience of athletic competition and achievement by combining words, images, audio, video and data analysis into compelling features or chronicles. Quokka's goal was to give viewers a glimpse of an athlete's experiences from a personal perspective.

I've gathered together some of the chronicles I built while working on the site for the round the world sailing race called the BT Global Challenge. The images and words of each piece were transmitted via satellite from the middle of the ocean by crewmembers aboard each boat.

Design of the Chronicles

Many of the chronicles I designed incorporated a more cinematic approach to presenting the words and images supplied by the race participants. Some techiniques that I used include panning across images and zooming in or out of a particular image. I also took advantage of the transitional effects built into the Flash tool including fades and motion tweens.
